Christopher Whitcutt obtained a BA, majoring in philosophy and law, and an LLB from the University of the Witwatersrand. He was an attorney for 3 ½ years before being called to the Bar in 1995. He took silk in 2011 and served on the Bar Council in 2016/17.

Christopher’s area of practice is general commercial law, specialising in the law relating to restraints of trade and unlawful competition. His practice also includes defamation, company law and mining law matters.

Christopher has acted as a judge of the High Court, as an arbitrator and as a mediator. He was accredited by the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) as a commercial mediator in April 2007 and conducts commercial mediations and is a member of the Arbitration Foundation of South Africa.

Christopher has been actively involved in the General Council of the Bar and Johannesburg Society of Advocates advocacy training programme since 1999, training pupils, intermediate and experienced advocates as well as advocacy trainers. He served on the General Council of the Bar advocacy training sub-committee which set up and ran the inaugural advanced residency based advanced, intermediate and appeals advocacy courses in Stellenbosch, South Africa, conducted annually since 2011. He has taught on advanced advocacy training courses in South Africa, Australia, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
