Russell holds an LLB from the University of Pretoria as well as a Diploma from the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights on International Criminal Justice, Conflict Resolution, and Transitional Justice.

Prior to joining the Bar, Russell was a prosecutor in Johannesburg. His areas of practice include criminal law, commercial law, the law of delict, and the law governing the protection of whistleblowers.
