On 31 July 2021 the Shanghai International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (Shanghai International Arbitration Centre or SHIAC) appointed Henk Louw to its panels of arbitrators and mediators.
After extensive processes for the identification, assessment and selection of candidates, the SHIAC appointed its new panels of arbitrators and mediators. In addition to Henk, the panels include ten South Africans. They are Chic-Po (Albert) Huang, David Unterhalter, Ignatius Bredenkamp, Jenny Cane, Jeremy Gauntlett, Leoh Tshepo Sibeko, Lindiwe Grace Thomas, Louis Harms, Michael Kuper and Patrick Lane.
The new panel of arbitrators comprises 1115 members of which 286 are from foreign countries, constituting 32.38% of the panel. The arbitrators are from 80 countries and regions around the world.
Members’ expertise range from international and domestic trade, finance, capital markets, foreign investment, construction, shipping and logistics, also including e-commerce, scientific innovation, culture and entertainment, network information security, digital trade, carbon emissions and e-sports live matches. The arbitrators have also been selected from a larger pool of countries, in line with the continuous increase in use of arbitration for dispute resolution, also by applying foreign laws and international conventions.
